Why We Service Gold Coast
The Gold Coast sits at the southern edge of the fire ant biosecurity zone, which makes it one of the most important areas in the country to get right. Fire ants have spread south and west since their original South East Queensland detection, and the Gold Coast is the last densely populated stretch before the New South Wales border. A nest missed in Coomera or Helensvale matters well beyond the property it sits on.
Local conditions make the job harder than most. Warm, humid summers and light sandy soils suit red imported fire ants almost perfectly. They nest readily in disturbed ground, turf, garden beds and stockpiled material. Add the Gold Coast's constant construction and landscaping activity and you have the other half of the problem: fire ants rarely walk to a new suburb, they get carried there. Topsoil, turf, mulch, potted plants and machinery can move a colony further in one truck trip than the ants would travel in years.
That's why much of our Gold Coast work is commercial rather than residential. We were recently called to a Gold Coast construction site where stockpiled topsoil had become heavily infested. Left untreated, that material would have carried live colonies to every site it was delivered to. Moving soil, turf, mulch or plants out of a fire ant biosecurity zone carries legal obligations under the Biosecurity Act 2014, and the responsibility sits with the person moving the material.
We treat homes and yards across Southport, Surfers Paradise, Broadbeach, Burleigh Heads, Robina, Nerang, Helensvale and Palm Beach. We also work with builders, civil contractors, landscapers and turf suppliers who need sites treated and material cleared before it leaves the property.
If you've found a nest, or you're moving soil off a Gold Coast property, contact us today.
More On Gold Coast
The Gold Coast has a long and evolving history, from its Indigenous heritage to its rapid urban development. For thousands of years, the Yugambeh people lived in the region, managing the land and its resources sustainably. With European settlement in the 1800s, timber cutting, agriculture, and later tourism, shaped the region’s economy and landscape. The combination of rapid growth, changing land use, and ongoing development has also brought challenges, including environmental concerns and the spread of invasive species like fire ants.
With increased urbanisation, the Gold Coast’s warm climate and sandy soils have made it an ideal environment for pests such as fire ants to thrive. As the city expanded, so too did the risk of infestations affecting homes, businesses, and natural areas. Fire ants, an aggressive and highly invasive species, were first detected in South East Queensland in 2001 and have since spread across many parts of the region, posing a significant threat to local ecosystems, agriculture, and public safety.
Much like the Gold Coast itself, pest management has had to adapt to ongoing development and environmental changes. Effective fire ant control is essential to protecting both residential and commercial properties, ensuring public spaces remain safe, and preventing further spread into the surrounding environment. By using proven eradication methods and working alongside government initiatives, businesses like Fire Ant Solutions play a key role in safeguarding the Gold Coast’s homes, workplaces, and natural habitats from the ongoing threat of fire ants.
As the region continues to grow, so does the need for proactive pest management to maintain the lifestyle and safety that the Gold Coast is known for. Fire ants are a challenge that requires constant vigilance, and with professional treatment and community awareness, their impact can be minimised. Through effective prevention and control, residents and businesses can help ensure the Gold Coast remains a great place to live and work, free from the dangers of fire ant infestations.
